What is an Apostille?

An apostille is a certification on a document that verifies the authenticity of a document's signature, seal, and or the official that certifies a public document. The Apostille insures the document was issued or properly certified by an official in good standing. The Apostille is also known as a certificate of authentication. An apostille is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the 1961 Hague Convention, which abolished the need for legalization for foreign public documents. This allows a document to be recognized as valid in another country, if that country is a member of the Hague Convention.
